Kehlani- Gangsta lyrics
We have agreed to use the song '"Gangsta" by female R&B artist, Kehlani. This song was written to feature in the film 'Suicide Squad', which was released this year. After choosing the song, we then decided to analyse the lyrics and by doing this we hope to be able to make links between the lyrics and visuals.
This song is used in the film to describe the relationship between the characters; Harley Quinn and the Joker.
I need a gangsta
To love me better
Than all the others do
To always forgive me
Ride or die with me
That's just what gangsters do
I'm fucked up, I'm black and blue
I'm built for all the abuse
I got secrets that nobody, nobody, nobody knows
I'm good on that pussy shit
I don't want what I can get
I want someone with secrets that nobody, nobody, nobody knows
I need a gangsta -
To love me better
Than all the others do
To always forgive me
Ride or die with me
That's just what gangsters do
My freakness is on the loose
And running all over you
Please, take me to places that nobody, nobody knows
You got me hooked up on the feeling
You got me hanging from the ceiling
Got me up so high I'm barely breathing
So don't let me, don't let me, don't let me, don't let me go
I need a gangsta
To love me better
Than all the others do
To always forgive me
Ride or die with me
That's just what gangsters do
They do, they do, they do oh
To always forgive me
Ride or die with me
That's just what gangsters do
END OF SONG
Lyric breakdown/analysis:
"I need a Gangsta" -The metaphor 'Gangsta' could suggest that she wants a romantic relationship with someone who would have the same dedication and loyalty for her, that he would have for his crew.
"Ride or die with me" -This verb phrase could imply that she wants someone to be her partner in crime.
"I'm built for all the abuse" -This complex sentence suggests that she is now immune to abuse due to her having to deal with it in her past. And therefore makes her character mentally and physically strong.
"I don't want what I can get" - Implying that she wants someone who's original and unique. And who specifically meets the criteria of her ideal man.
"That's just what Gangster's do" - This is perhaps natural behaviour for a 'gangster' and that their stereotypical representation is based upon these actions.
"Got me so high I'm barely breathing" & "You got me hooked up on the feeling" - This common use of metaphors references to drug use and therefore she is addicted to him, suggesting he is her drug.
